Classic Tudor Gets Relaxed Makeover

WEST HARTFORD, CT — A 7,900-sq.-ft. Tudor home was no match for SKM Design, LLC, in West Hartford, CT, which took on the whole-house renovation to give it the relaxed attitude the homeowners – California transplants – were desiring. The four-story home showcases stunning architectural details, including carved wood accents, custom wood doors, wrought iron leaded glass windows and a spiral stone staircase, but also included a choppy main floor, awkward layouts and outdated spaces. The design firm moved forward with a plan to incorporate a clean, simple design with white walls that would allow the details to shine.

For this casual Tudor style, Stacy Millman, AIA, principal, SKM Design affirms that most of the original details were preserved, but format rooms were eliminated. Not only were the walls taken down between these spaces, but a brick chimney that ran through all four floors was removed to open up the space. “The whole home now feels open and welcoming,” she states.

The kitchen was previously closed off and broken into parts, including a main kitchen, butler’s pantry and closet. By combining these spaces and removing the chimney, additional square footage was gained that allowed for a large island with sink, ample prep space and seating for three, along with a home office area.

A large opening now connects the updated kitchen to the family room, which was previously the dining room. Another opening allows access to the dining room, which was formerly the double-height entry.

SKM Design also took 120 square feet from the master bedroom to give to the master bath. The new iteration allows for the spa-like space that was sought after, complete with a highly requested sauna, freestanding tub, shower for two and a private toilet room. ▪
